Wardrobe Staple: the no-tuck top

black pants outfit business attire for women

Express top xxs (3 colors – extra discount in cart!), wide leg trousers 00P, EP belt xxs, Polene bag

I’ve shared about this top several times already (see on me here with a skirt & here with linen pants) and had to add another neutral color to my collection. It’s one of my favorite “better than basic” tops for giving the illusion of a tucked-in, waist-cinching look, without actually having the hassle of tucking and re-tucking your shirt throughout the day. I’m partnering with Express to share two monochromatic outfits featuring this top that are easy and chic for work.

Sleeveless No-Tuck Top (more colors here)

In black, camel, gray, and a few colorful options

I’ve shown this top for workwear in this post but it’s the easiest piece for throwing on casually over jeans or shorts. The bottom band is elastic and the top has light shoulder padding to add some shape and structure. I love that it has a looser drape to it and doesn’t cling to the body. Note, the black color is more of a washed black and not a saturated black.

Fit: True to size, but FYI this is a shorter top which I personally like since I wear only higher-waisted bottoms. I’m 5 feet tall and it would likely be slightly cropped on someone taller.

High Waisted Wide Leg Trouser

In short, petite, regular & long sizes

My most-worn Express pant is still their pleated ankle pant pictured below in cream, but this new black trouser is very flattering and made me feel so long and lean! I have to disagree with the 1 reviewer as I thought these black pants were actually better quality than most of my Express pieces, made of a medium weight woven fabric with nice drape.

Fit: This style fit me snugly at the waist (runs smaller at the waist than their other pants), but heads up, the length is pretty LONG even on the petite / short sizing. I’m 5′ tall for reference, and these pants hit floor length on me with 3.5 inch heels on. The 00P I have on measures 12″ across the waist, 11″ rise, with a 29″ inseam.

I had never bought a whole outfit from a post before this, but I was so taken with the silhouette (and the $17 sale price on the top didn’t hurt!).

I’m 5’6″ and take a size 12 in Express pants, and love how this pairing looks on me. Great summer work outfit. I wanted to share my experience for other folks who aren’t necessarily petite but enjoy your style and trust your recommendations!

Hi Erica, this makes me so happy to hear! I’m so glad that you’re loving the pairing and really appreciate that you took the time to share this feedback! Did you get the ankle pants or the black ones?

Oh, good question! I should have specified, I got the super-high-waist black pants (love the hourglass shape, and also felt I needed the max rise to hit at my natural waist and meet the hem of the cropped top) — but I have my eye on the ankle pants now too! I’m back in the office one week a month, and rebuilding a work wardrobe… slowly!

I wore this very outfit today, with commute-friendly platform sandals. So comfy, and loved not fussing with a tuck!

Your blog is fabulous! We are the same size, and I can buy the awesome pieces that you post knowing they will fit! I just tried to add the express petite cream pants and the xxs muscle tanks to my cart – all are sold out! Guess I didn’t snatch them fast enough…

Thank you for your encouraging words, Andrea! Such a bummer that those pieces are sold out. I know that the petite ankle pants are often restocked, so I recommend keeping an eye on those!

  3. I’m curious if the elastic creeps upward throughout the day? Any time I’ve tried any sort of “bubble” top, it always wants to snap up toward my natural waist.

Hi Alyssa, I do wear the elastic right at my natural waist so that it doesn’t creep further up!
